2011 SCOTT STAMP CATALOG PRINT Edition in Color

NEW COUNTRY ALIGNMENTS INTRODUCED IN VOLUME 4 OF THE 2011 SCOTT CATALOGUE

Volume 4 is the first Volume of the 2011 catalogues that features the new country alignments. The 2011 edition of Volume 4 contains countries of the world J through M. "Volume 4 has grown over the years to be by far the thickest and heaviest of the six Standard volumes. It has reached the limit of the binding machines, and something has to give. Therefore, 2011 has become the year in which the volumes are evened out in terms of the number of pages that each contains," according to Scott Catalogue Editor, James Kloetzel.

Along with this important change, there were significant numbers of value changes recorded for a wide range countries. One of those countries includes, Kuwait with more than 1,200 changes. In the modern period of modestly valued stamps, increases in catalogue value of 25 percent are often seen. Some increases are even greater, such as the Cultural History sheet of 25 from 1997, Scott 1378, which leaps to $27.50 mint, never hinged and used, from $20 both ways in the 2010 Volume 4. The pattern of significant value increases continues right up to very recent issues.

There were more than 900 value changes in Latvia, where early stamps from 1918-40, including back-of-the-book issues, are down. But collectors will welcome the addition of set values for never-hinged stamps from 1919 through 1940, including back-of-the book issues. Values from 1991 to the present are generally stable or modestly higher. And values for stamps issued under Russian occupation in 1919, Scott 2N1-2N36, are sharply higher.

Stamp values are on the rise in Macao, particularly for 1981 to very recent issues. One star performer is Scott 539, the 1.30p Dr. Sun Yat-sen souvenir sheet of 1 of 1986. It leaps to $62.50 mint, never hinged and $45 used, from just $12 mint, never hinged and $9 used in last year's Volume 4. Another startling rise in value is seen for Scott 550a, the 1987 souvenir sheet of four Decorated Fans, which moves all the way to $300 mint, never hinged, from $125 mint, never hinged last year. Other souvenir sheets from this time period also move strongly upward in value.

Macedonia stamps from all periods show moderate upward movement. The 2005 block of four and souvenir sheet of four for the 50th Anniversary of Europa stamps, Scott 352-353, show a healthy increase in value to $55 each both mint, never hinged and used, from $45 each both ways in the 2010 Volume 4 Standard catalogue.

An important editorial enhancement this year is the assignment of lettered minor numbers to worldwide stamps of the same design but with different year dates in the lower margins. Some of these varieties have very different values. Listings affected in this year’s Volume 4 include Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania and Malawi.

The cover price for the printed version of Volume 4 and each subsequent Scott 2011 Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue volume is $79.99. Volume 5 (Countries of the World N-Sam) will be released in August, Volume 6 (Countries of the World San-Z) in September, the U.S. Specialized in October, and the Classic Specialized in November.
