IRELAND LEAD VALUE CHANGES IN SCOTT 2011 VOLUME 3

Thousands of value changes were recorded in Volume 3 of the 2011 Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue, which includes listings and values for Countries of the World G-I. While Ireland leads the way with more than 3,600 value changes, other countries with significant changes include Ghana, Gibraltar, Greece, Grenada, Hungary, India, Iran and Iraq. "Demand for common material remains tepid, but demand for rarities and high-grade stamps remains red-hot," said Scott Catalogue Editor James Kloetzel.

Value increases in the stamps of Ireland are spread throughout the listings, and some are significant. The 1922 Provisional Government 2sh6p-10sh high-value overprints, Scott 36-38, show definite upward strength. Scott 36 moves to $325 unused, $550 mint never hinged and $450 used for 2011, from $200 unused, $400 mint never hinged and $325 used in last year's Volume 3. The 10sh gray blue, Scott 38, jumps to $1,900 unused, $3,000 mint never hinged and $2,250 used, from $1,500 unused, $2,500 mint never hinged and $1,800 used last year. The 1934 2p gray green coil, Scott 92, rises to $75 unused, $125 mint never hinged and $125 used, from $55 unused, $100 mint never hinged and $70 used in the 2010 Volume 3.

More modest gains are seen in stamps such as the 1935 10sh dark blue overprint by Harrison & Sons, Scott 95, which moves to $550 unused and $1,400 mint never hinged, from $500 unused and $1,300 mint never hinged in 2010. The used value remains unchanged.

In Hungary, a great many imperforate sets mentioned and valued in footnotes rise significantly in value. Otherwise, most of the 1,277 scattered value changes tend to be modest increases. Typical is the unused 1p-10p set showing Madonna, Patroness of Hungary, Scott 462-465, which rises to $267.50 unused from last year's value of $252.50 unused. The used value of the set shows more a impressive jump, moving to $64.25 from $37.50, on the strength of a big jump in value of the 10p high value, to $52.50 from just $30 last year.

Hungary's 1948 air post semi-official souvenir sheets showing Budapest's Chain Bridge, Scott CB1D and CB2, each rise to $120 mint never hinged and $120 used, from $110 both ways in 2010.

Editorial enhancements include the addition of new lettered minor varieties in 21 countries. Several new major numbers make their first appearance in this 2011 Volume 3. In Guadeloupe, the 1903 30c surcharges on 60c and 1fr postage dues, on each of which the "3" of "30" has a flat top, formerly Scott J13a and J14b, have been elevated to their deserved status as major numbers Scott J13A and J14A, because these surcharges are significantly different from Scott J13 and J14, which have "3"s with rounded tops.

In the Feudatory States of India, the stamps of Kotah and Tonk, first introduced in last year's Classic Specialized Catalogue of Stamps and Covers, have been brought into the Standard catalog this year.

Ireland also sees a new major number introduced this year. This is the carmine overprint on the 9p black brown definitive of April-July 1922. The 4p slate green of this set has been known with both red and carmine overprints, and they are Scott 10 and 10A. Now the carmine overprint on the 9p joins the red overprint previously known (Scott 11), and it becomes Scott 11A, with values of $150 unused, $225 mint never hinged and $175 used.
